The government is to award a contract to build a £130m road tunnel - running 2km alongside Stonehenge, early in 2002 as part of a £155m project. The agreement was made in order to restore the pre-historic landscape, which currently abuts the busy A303. Five contractors have been invited to tender. The Stonehenge Management Plan announced by English Heritage, also includes a new visitor centre on an 80-acre site just outside the World Heritage site, two miles from the Stones. The funding of the scheme is dependant on English Heritage securing substantial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund. A decision is expected in 2002 on an application for a £25m award.
