There is growing scepticism about the scale of the food intolerance epidemic. A new study by the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) suggests that only one or two per cent of adults are food intolerant, and that although around five to eight per cent of children are affected too, up to 90 per cent of them have outgrown the intolerance by the age of three. The BNF report says that food intolerance is the general term used to describe a range of adverse responses to food, including food allergy: 'correctly diagnosed food allergy is even more rare, affecting one to two per cent of children and less than one per cent adults'.
