Whitby's long-awaited £1.8m sports centre has been given the go-ahead following a donation from Sport England. The project, expected to open next autumn, will be 70 per cent funded by a Sport England grant of £1.2m. Other funding partners include Scarborough Borough Council, the Government's Capital Challenge Initiative and the Foundation for Sports and Arts. The new centre, featuring a four-court sports hall, fitness suite and outdoor floodlit multi-use games area, will be built on the site of the existing council run indoor swimming pool and is expected to attract more than 40,000 visitors a year. Development will also include changes to the existing swimming pool and the creation of new changing rooms and viewing areas. We made a commitment some time ago to bring new sports centre facilities to Whitby where they are much-needed, said Councillor Eileen Bosomworth, leader of Scarborough council. I am delighted that Sport England has granted us this funding. Work is due to start in November.
